Rising Stars: Meet Anna Petrosian

Anna Petrosian, Founder & CCO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Petrosian.

Hi Anna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am Anna Petrosian, Founder and CCO of Dose of Colors. My ardor for beauty started at age 13 when I first noticed how every woman I looked up to would put on makeup and immediately become more confident. I was always drawn to natural-looking makeup, mostly because the idea of enhancing one’s beauty using a minimal amount of makeup or creating a natural look using a full face of makeup intrigued me. It’s always fun to experiment with color…but color for me happens in doses. Hence Dose of Colors.

This really sparked my passion for the art of makeup and years later enrolled at MUD (MakeUp Designory School) where I got to perfect my skills and eventually married my style of doing makeup with trends that were current. After graduating, I worked at local LA salons as their resident makeup artist and soon clients started booking appointments with me months out. My skill as an artist was finally being recognized and it meant so much! It motivated me to keep going because I knew I was working toward something bigger. At one point I was offered the opportunity to work with a few TV personalities which allowed me to work on-set and adapt to the quick rhythms of life behind the scenes. Shortly after came Instagram…and that’s when it all really took off for me. In its nascent years, it was the perfect vessel to create 2 minute eye looks using a multitude of products; some colorful, some monochromatic, but always impactful. Once the eye looks became a staple, I started posting full-face looks which also started to pique interest. After a few posts, I had amassed a following who would come to my page specifically to see what new looks I was going to post so they could recreate. Before engagement was a thing, I was engaging with followers; offering personalized tips and tricks for their daily makeup routines, recommending specific products from some of my favorite brands and guiding them through the evolving beauty landscape. As Instagram’s purpose evolved with time, so did the type of content I started to do and slowly my followers began requesting to see more of my life as a makeup artist.

In parallel, I was noticing gaps in the industry and visualized what I would bring to the makeup world if I had my own line. On a whim and with a dream, I approached my husband, Aro, and being the encouraging husband he is, he said “Go for it. I support you.” Out of my condo in the Valley, Dose of Colors was born in May 2013 with three pairs of eyelashes. The first day we received eleven orders and I couldn’t believe it! The response was overwhelming and two years later, we launched our Liquid Matte Lips which changed everything. Orders started pouring in as I was featuring the shades on my Instagram doing tutorials using our Liquid Lipsticks. This buzz led to opening an office and formalizing operations with a team on-hand. Now almost eight years later, several teams and a complete makeup line, I launched Dose of Colors skincare with five clean, vegan products to positive reviews. It was major for our brand to have the trust of our consumers for their skincare routines as well! Another dream of mine has always been having a clothing line and for the last year, I’ve been working on my line, which I’ve also been talking about on Instagram, and it’s materializing  (literally) January 2021. All I can say is stay tuned!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any entrepreneurial venture, launching a brand has had its challenges. I’ve always taken great pride in my brand and the quality of products we offer. Going to market with the best products possible is at the top of my list. People don’t realize that a product can take a year or more from inception to launch — that process alone requires a lot of back and forth with labs and my team. As founder, inevitably I absorb a lot of the stress but through the years, I’ve learned to give myself cushions and buffers around all dates. Setting real expectations has been a grounding lesson in business for me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Dose of Colors was founded in May 2013 with the dream to bring high-efficacy color cosmetics to makeup lovers, artists and general consumers alike. Our offering ranges from matte lipsticks to glosses, foundation to concealer and more. Our products are comprised of the best formulations and are always cruelty-free. Our best-selling lip products (Liquid Matte Lips and Stay Glossy Lip Glosses) are 100% vegan and have high color payoff. Since 2015 these lip categories have been staples in our product catalogue and millions have been sold worldwide. In November 2020, we launched Dose of Colors Skincare, which is a proud accomplishment for our brand. It’s a clean, vegan line full of beneficial properties and natural ingredients. Never in a million years did we think we would be where we are, much less have been able to see my vision of launching skincare come to life. At Dose of Colors, we firmly believe the consumer, our following of many years is at the heart of what we do. We strive to make the best cosmetics products for them — for the people that have come to expect the best ingredients and color palettes that are not only visually pleasing but have excellent pigmentation and color range throughout all options available.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite memory of youth was meeting Aro, my husband and CEO of Dose of Colors. We met when I was 21 and he 22 at a mutual friend’s home. It’s been a great ride by his side – as he has been my rock through the company’s growth. He runs his own businesses and Dose of Colors full time. Without him and the support of our customers, none of this would be possible.
