Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Blackman.
A successful entrepreneur for over a decade, Stacy Blackman has a proven track record, having founded and sold her first company, WebWisher.com, in 1999. During this time, Fortune Magazine chronicled Stacy’s career for a span of nearly two years, running stories about her in several issues and featuring her on their cover in May of 2000. WebWisher is now part of The Knot, a publicly traded company.
Stacy earned her BS in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and her MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
After graduating from the Wharton School, Stacy began working in private equity at the Prudential Capital Group in San Francisco. She then went on to earn her MBA at Kellogg.
Following business school, she tapped into her flair for invention and began building businesses, launching WebWisher, evaluating businesses as a Resident Entrepreneur at idealab! And eventually launching Stacy Blackman Consulting, the leading admissions consulting advisory.
View a brief video where Stacy describes the story of how and why she launched SBC:
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road! I used to get frustrated by the bumps in the road but now I realize that no one gets a free ride. As your business gets bigger you will have challenges and that is the price you pay.
My company is very people intensive, so my struggles are generally related to managing such a large group of consultants and clients. These are all very accomplished, intelligent and driven individuals, but that does not mean that we see things eye to eye.
Over 15 years, I have seen everything – clients with very, very high expectations, who don’t want to pay, who really expect the work to be done for them. When I first started, I was very sensitive, and would be personally very injured if I saw a negative comment about “Stacy Blackman Consulting”. I now have a thicker skin. I do everything possible to make our clients successful and satisfied but have learned you cannot please everyone.
As the leader in the industry, there are many companies that watch our every move and copy us – from our website to pricing to partnerships. This is also something I have to navigate – sometimes accepting it, sometimes asking a competitor to remove the language that plagiarizes us.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Stacy Blackman Consulting – what should we know?

Our guiding principles:
CARING IS OUR MOST POWERFUL TOOL.
We truly care about our clients and our larger audience. That’s why we strive to deliver 10x in everything we do.
EVERYTHING IS FIGUREOUTABLE.
We believe your weaknesses can be your strengths. We’ll show you how to make sense of your tangled and flawed background and develop a personal story that shines.
WE BUST ANXIETY AND OVERWHELM.
We’re on a mission to help you reach your most ambitious dreams and get in to business school. And we want you to enjoy the process along the way. We’re going to reduce your anxiety and take the stress out of the journey so you can think clearly and focus.
WE DON’T DO ANYTHING JUST “FOR THE MONEY.”
If we don’t think we can work with you, we won’t do it. It’s that simple.
WE BELIEVE IN YOU.
We know you’ve got a lot riding on the decision to go to business school and you put a lot of faith in us to help get you there. Your confidence means a lot and we don’t take it for granted. We believe you can get in. We believe in hard work and are willing to work hard with you.
We believe you have everything it takes to get into business school.
You just need SBC to show you how.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My success can be defined by two quotes that I literally think about every day.
“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” Robert Collier
I did not achieve success over night. And many days, the things that I do are very small, seemingly insignificant. There is no one big thing that I did to become successful, I simply plugged away, day after day, did it all and then hired people to help as I grew.
“Do or do not. There is no try.” Yoda
I hate it when people say they “will try to get it done”. I believe you either do it or you don’t. We all can get done what we want to. I write it on my calendar every single day and I make sure it happens. I don’t “try”. I do it.
