Today we’d like to introduce you to Rylee Shull.
Hi Rylee, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
The idea for Aylorien was born out of my (Rylee Shull’s) personal struggles with health nutrition on a vegetarian diet.
My first five years as a vegetarian were normal. Then all of the sudden, without making any changes to my eating habits, I started gaining weight. I had gone through a recent breakup and felt anxious and depressed. I developed a nasty rash around my nose and mouth, and nothing my MD or dermatologist prescribed helped. I started to struggle with sleep, which made my anxiety even worse.
With no luck at the doctor, I gave alternative medicine a shot, and a muscle-testing specialist suggested I start taking Magnesium and Selenium. I felt skeptical, but at this point I felt like I had nothing to lose.
Within less than a week, my rash disappeared. I was sleeping again, and over the next several months, I shed all the extra weight I had gained.
I was shocked at how quickly I saw a difference. I wondered to myself, “are Magnesium and Selenium magic?”, This experience made me want to learn more, so I spent the next several years studying vegetarian nutrition. I read through the journals, the lab studies, and every piece of medical research I could find.
I learned that eating vegetarian has powerful, well-documented health benefits. It’s been proven to fight cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity and can even increase the length of your life. However, animal food sources are far superior when it comes to bioavailability, which essentially means how easily your body can absorb and utilize the nutrients in foods. Vegetables and particularly plant-based protein options contain various types of anti-nutrients, which bind to and block nutrient absorption. Persistently low absorption of key vitamins and minerals like Magnesium, Selenium, and a few others, can mildly or severely impact your health over time.
Fast-forward to today, I founded Aylorien because I believe wholeheartedly in the mission of eating vegetarian, to protect our plant and better our health, and I wanted to both raise awareness for eating vegetarian and help vegetarians avoid what happened to me. We have customers that are vegetarians and meat-eaters alike, but all with a common mission, which is to eat less meat, and do more good, and stay healthy and energized doing it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Entrepreneurship is never a smooth road.
Of course, there’s funding, supply chain, talent, and a whole plethora of business problems to consider, but I think the biggest challenge for me has been the internal, mental/emotional battle.
Imposter syndrome and doubt have become like old friends. Every day I wake up and make the choice to carry on, despite the constant fear and self-criticism swirling around in my head. No matter how defeated I feel, no matter how hard it gets, I must find a way to continue. I summon strength to take one more step every day, find the next best action, and this has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.
It’s not all bad, there are high highs, but also low lows, and despite the emotional roller coaster, the silver lining is in many ways Aylorien has been my greatest teacher. I would never have been forced to work with my inner perfectionist or find tools for dealing with self-doubt had I not embarked on this entrepreneurial journey.
Entrepreneurship is simultaneously the most rewarding and confronting thing a person can do, so if you’re thinking about it, I say go for it, but know that the road will most certainly be bumpy.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
