Hidden Gems: Meet Jason Kozma of High Performance Personal Training

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Kozma.

Hi Jason, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in Wisconsin and while I was pretty active, I wasn’t the most fit kid. My older brother started lifting weights in the basement. I had to get in on it. Once I got the training bug, there was no stopping me. I started training for bodybuilding competitions as a teen in Tennessee in the 90’s and competed at the ages 15-19 culminating in a class win at the NPC Southern States. (I won all my shows at ages 18-19)

I stopped competing and focused on college. Upon graduation, I moved to LA in 1995 to become a full-time personal trainer. There was no such thing in Nashville at the time.

I knew that the newly burgeoning internet was the future of advertising. I created the first version of my website and I was the second personal trainer to have a website on the internet (that I could find).

I built my business up, as well as my site focusing on client before and afters, and my credentials as Southern States champion.

It took a while, but I built my business to the point where my schedule was full and I was mostly farming new clients out to train with my team trainers.

I wanted to focus on my physique again and started training at Gold’s Gym with the top bodybuilders of the day. I got back into competition in my 30’s winning more titles including the prestigious Mr. America in 2004.

Though my business was successful and solid before that, adding Mr. America to my credentials really went a long way in promotion!

I don’t compete anymore but I really enjoy my work transforming people’s bodies, minds and lives and I occasionally train other people for contests, satisfying that competitive urge.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s never a smooth road. We all hit the bumps. Moving to LA with no job and no money is difficult, I’m sure anyone would say that. For me, as with all trainers, the hard part was getting the clients. I started before the Internet and social media existed. Print advertising was expensive and often performed poorly.

When the Internet became widely used, I instinctively knew it was the future of advertising. When I created my first website to recruit clients, it solved many issues for me because people were able to find me online.

FYI I never took a computer class, I’m completely self-taught and figured out web design and SEO on my own.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about High Performance Personal Training?
I’m known for my custom body transformation program, a unique combination of resistance training, fat-burning cardio workouts and balanced nutrition using whole foods. My clients tell me that they appreciate my no-nonsense, no gimmick approach to nutrition and it helps them make smart choices.

I take pride in helping my clients drop pounds, improve their form and lose the inches but what makes me happiest is to see the transformation in their personal lives brought by consistent workouts and proper nutrition.

What sets me apart is that I don’t “promise” results, I guarantee them. My program is not one-size-fits-all, I’m serious about helping my clients transform. I will push you, educate you and help you create the body you always wanted. Just look at my before and after photo gallery on my site, https://www.jasonkozma.com/.

It’s also important to know that I don’t just train normal clients, I also train bodybuilders, trainers and athletes.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I would say playing in the park down the street from my childhood home. Climbing trees, cliffs, swimming in Lake Michigan. I was a very active kid. Still heavy, but very active.
