Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Qualls.
Hi Christian, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Movement has always been my calling. I began dancing around the age of two or three, long before I had access to formal training. I didn’t grow up on the competition circuit; instead, I learned by watching and absorbing. Television shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bring It, and Dance Moms became my first exposure to the art form, and through imitation, I discovered how naturally movement came to me.
As I grew, I explored dance through extracurricular programs at Brick Avon Academy in Newark, New Jersey, under the guidance of mentors such as Adeesina Sampson and Jacqueline Freeman. They helped shape my early foundation and nurtured my curiosity, fueling a passion that would only grow stronger over time.
In 2017, I was accepted into an arts middle school dance program that launched me into a pre-professional high school track. There, I trained intensively in ballet, modern, and West African dance with mentors Krystal Hall-Glass and Ronnie D. Carney. Their connection to The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater exposed me to a wide spectrum of styles and professional influences, shaping me into a technically skilled and artistically versatile performer.
This foundation led me to AMDA Los Angeles, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Dance Theatre. At AMDA, my artistry expanded as I trained in contemporary, Broadway and musical theatre styles, commercial jazz, and hip-hop. The experience honed my versatility, strengthened my stage presence, and affirmed my identity as a performer capable of moving fluidly across genres while staying true to myself.
Today, signed with MSA Agency, I continue to build a career defined by versatility, discipline, and growth. Every stage of my journey has been a stepping stone, and I embrace the next chapter with unwavering passion, ready to bring energy, artistry, and authenticity to every performance I step into.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? Absolutely not. As artists, we can get trapped in our own minds, fixating on how we think things should happen instead of appreciating the progress we’ve already made. I’ve faced plenty of self-doubt, betrayal, and mistreatment at every stage of my growth. Some of the toughest challenges were learning to embrace my unique voice, resisting the urge to compare myself to others, and pushing through periods when doors kept closing. But every setback only fueled my drive, strengthened my resilience, and pushed me closer to the artist I am today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What sets me apart is my unwavering persistence. No matter the challenges I face, I refuse to shut down, using every struggle to fuel my artistry. I’m proud to be the first in my generation of my family to earn a bachelor’s degree, being signed with MSA Agency, and trained by some of the world’s best teachers. Their guidance, combined with God’s grace, has shaped not only my craft but my character. I bring that resilience, gratitude, and authenticity to every performance, and it’s what truly distinguishes me as an artist.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The quality I believe has been most important to my success is balance — the ability to be both firm and kind. This balance has allowed me to receive constructive criticism without taking it personally, while still maintaining my joy and passion for my craft. It’s about standing confidently in who I am as an artist and as a person, having a voice for myself, and navigating every challenge with both strength and grace.
