Today we’d like to introduce you to Shihan Lu.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Shihan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I majored in television-directing in college. After I graduated, I had the opportunity to work at the Sundance Film Festival as a volunteer. This experience influenced me to pursue my dream in filmmaking. Having the support of my family and friends, I decided to move to Los Angeles and pursue my master’s degree in filmmaking. My first time as a producer was in my thesis film, where I found my strength as a producer by solving the many issues that will come about during pre-production through post-production. Having my thesis film accepted in various film festivals, I found my value as a producer by helping my crew find synergy and cohesion within the different departments and to see their hard work come to fruition. My hard work and reputation was recognized by my peers which got me more work as a film producer.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road is never smooth in the entertainment industry. Every project has its own unique problems that arise during development. Having to deal with different personalities and finding mutual understanding for the needs of my crew can be daunting at times, but I thrive on helping others reach their full potential. I have a nurturing personality and it fits my needs of being a producer. Every position in a film is important. During a recent shoot, one of my electricians had gotten his earpiece stuck in his ear and I had to take him to the emergency room to have it removed. As a producer, no job is too small and every crew member is important.

Being a filmmaker is a pretty lucky role in my life. I have made many good friends on different projects, which is the true measure of luck in the entertainment industry.
